The /ou/ Sound

There are three ways to write the /ou/ sound:
– /ou/ in out (common),
– /ou/ in cow (common),
– /ou/ in plough and drought (less common).
The vast majority of words that end with the /ou/ sound will end with the letters ow.
Both ou and ow are used in the middle of words, but ou is more common.
Before n and l it is usually ow.
Before nd, use ou.
